Drumagog 5 Latency Issues

Post by dougdougdoug »

Im having troubles with the amount of latency im getting with Drumagog 5. Im recording drums with two overheads and triggers on the toms, kick and snare with Drumagog on those tracks.Theres a VERY noticeable lag between the kick, snare and tom bleed from the overheads to when Drumagog actually triggers the samples. How do I fix this problem?

System Information:
Quad Core Mac Pro
Snow Leopard 10.6.5
Protools LE 8.0.1
Drumagog Basic 5.03b

Thanks,
Doug

Doug,

Pro Tools LE is without plugin delay compensation. The fact of the matter is a plugin like Drumagog requires a certain amount of latency just to be able to function. It has to look ahead in time to see the next snare or kick hit coming in order to align the new sound in time to play them both back together. Zero-latency drum replacement would not sound very good and by necessity would end up being late, because all it could do is trigger a new sound once it detects a hit and would have no way of aligning it with the original.

Saying that, Drumagog does included a low latency mode (with 3-4 ms of latency) for live situations. It is nowhere near as accurate as Advanced Mode and not suitable for mixing. You can also bounce to track and manually adjust the delay, as another workaround.

The newly released Pro Tools 9 includes built-in delay compensations (like every other product on the market), to eliminate the steps of bouncing and adjusting the track. So you could also upgrade to PT9.

Cheers,
Jack

Hey Jack,

Thank so much for the quick reply! Where do find the low latency mode to give that a shot?

Also, is there any way of getting Drumagog 4? I had a demo version a while back and never encountered this problem with it using the same setup.

Hello,

Drumagog Basic doesn't include the low-latency "Live" mode, it just has Advanced triggering mode (which is set to 80ms of latency). This should be fine, though, since you want to use Advanced mode anyway, as it is much more accurate than Live mode (which is found in the Pro and Platinum versions).

All you really need to do is nudge your Drumagog track 80ms earlier in time and it will match up exactly (in Pro Tools use the SPOT tool to type it in exactly).
