You don't have to wory about different volumes. Drumagog matches the sample volume to the volume of the trigger signal. You would be OK if you just made a gog out of 5 or 6 hits of the sound. That way, you at least get polyphony, something the drum machine doesn't give you.

If you have any control over the recording of the track that you are replacing, do what ever it takes to get the best trigger signal possible. Move the mic closer, use DDrum triggers, what ever. Unless I've been missing something (probably the case), I have needed to 'smooth' Drumagog's generated MIDI velocities. I use a MIDI-FX plug-in called Velomaster. It worked on version 3. It is (and was) always better to add from file. Just get a couple good hits together and hit 'add from file'.
