Utilising BFD ambience channels with Drumagog Samples

Post by kamanchidoyle »

Yawn,

I suspect this is a rehash of an already much discussed topic so apologies in advance.

So far so good for me with 'Gog. I'm pretty new to it but I can see the potential is huge. When I checked out the Shawn Pelton review of drumagog I noticed he was able to send a gog sample into BFD in order to utilise the ambient channels provided within BFD with samples not native to BFD. Am I correct in saying this? i.e. it doesnt have to be a BFD sample!?

If so can somebody talk me through the procedure!? I've followed as closely as possibly all pointers/instructions posted on the forum but am still having trouble. I've BFD Stereo set up on an Audio Track within ProTool 7.3 HD running on a Mac G5 with Tiger 10.4x. I have downloaded and installed MidiPipe and enabled it on "input devices" within Tools. Drumagog is inserted on the necessary track and the "midi out" option is active on the advanced page with "midi pipe input 1" selected. I have chosen Midi Channel 1 also on this page. BFD's Midi Input is set receive on channel 1.

How do I get the gog sample into BFD to record the Ambience from this stage?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
The Milky Bars are on me!

I have the exact same question... and a very similar set-up-- Pro Tools 7.4.

Thanks for asking! :)

Sorry for the delay in responding...

Here's how I do it:

The EASIEST way it have Drumagog Platinum (or DrumagogBFD) and Drumagog 1 (or preferably 1.5).

If you do have both of these, simply insert Drumagog Platinum in an audio track, and in the drop-down window (where you select GOGs) you select <BFD>.

A list appears where you then select the BFD kit piece.

It's that simple.

NOW... to use a GOG with BFD as your 'effects', I find it best to have TWO dupicate audio tracks.

For instance, start with a kick track and insert Drumagog, set it up to play the GOG of your choice.

Next make a copy of the kick track and insert Drumagog, set it up to access BFD.

Go into BFD and MUTE the direct sounds. You have three stereo ambiance channels - Overheads, Room and PZMs. Mix to taste with the GOG.

You can also insert two Drumagogs into one audio track. However, the second one is played by the first and delay issues will occur.

I find it best to have two separate tracks in case you do need to tweak any delay issues.

As you add more drums (i.e., snare, toms) you will only need one BFD running. I use the old Cubase 5 for this. If I am using BFD as ONLY an effects device, I'll only use BFD Stereo. Be sure to mute the Direct sounds - but you don't have to, you can also mix them in with the whole sound.

It's endless with the possibilities.

Keep your eye on the clock as days will go by with all that you can do.

;-)

I have been doing a similar thing with BFD2. But, you have to use Drumagog to send out MIDI to BFD2. Apparently the next upgrade of BFD2 will have the direct Drumagog interface ability.
