Drumagog plug-in hosting

Post by kraznet »

Hi there,

Is there a secret to hosting VST plug-ins in Drumagog? I've tried it with Toontrack Superior 2 and also Kontakt 4. I insert the plug-in and load the drum kit and get no sound and no graphical readout on the Drumagog timeline which normally shows the transients. It's only when I have loaded a Gog file that the plug-in side of it works. Is it a prerequisite that you need to have a Gog file loaded in order for the VST plug-in to work?

Thanks
Kraznet

Kraznet,

When Drumagog opens, a GOG file should be loaded. Your saved Default GOG Folder should be set to a folder that has GOG files in it. Drumagog is designed to be operating always with a GOG file loaded. You can turn the blend control in the Plugin Hosting section all the way to the VST side if you do not wish to hear the GOG file playback.

First thing I would recommend is to watch the tutorial video here: http://www.drumagog.com/video

The key is to clear the drum kit in what VST instrument you are hosting, be sure to have the correct MIDI Channel and MIDI Note selected. I would double check the MIDI note. Sometimes, depending on the host DAW, the MIDI note can be different in Drumagog by 1 octave (up or down).

Try this first, and if you're still having issues please let us know.

Cheers,

Hello Jack,

Thanks for your quick response. I managed to resolve the issue with the Gog sample path not being remembered by reinstalling Windows 7 on the offending computer. So now when I open Drumagog the sample path is remembered but a Gog file is not automatically loaded like you imply. But what you're saying is that you need to have a Gog file loaded in order for plug-in hosting to work. I'd had figured that out already, but I was just checking. I have no problems getting Drumagog to trigger the samples in the VST plug-in as I had worked out how to assign the correct MIDI note. I did watch the original videos before I bought the product.

One thing I have noticed is that the volume level of the sounds coming from the VST plug-in compared to the Gog samples is considerably lower. I will do some more experimenting anyway.

Kraznet,

Your default folder should be a folder with GOG files in it for it to automatically load a GOG file. If the default folder is the root of a drive, or a folder with more folders in it, that would cause it not to load a GOG. If you don't mind loading the GOG file manually each time you boot up, then its no problem :)

The output level of the VST plugin is MIDI data so it won't be level-matched with Drumagog. This is normal. You can raise it in the plugin itself or in the Drumagog plugin mixer.

Hi again Jack,

Yes that works which is helpful if you're using VST hosting all the time, at least you don't have to worry about loading up a Gog patch. Although if the default path is a kick drum patch and you insert Drumagog on snare, you will have to navigate to another folder anyway if you're planning on mixing and matching Gog samples with VST samples.
The output level of the VST plugin is MIDI data so it won't be level-matched with Drumagog. This is normal. You can raise it in the plugin itself or in the Drumagog plugin mixer.
So it's normal behaviour. That's fine. I will compensate like you suggested.
