Just to add, Don't be afraid to really exaggerate the attack of the original by whatever means (radically set gate, EQ, anything). It helps a lot in cases where you are having trouble getting a single setting that works through the whole song. Just mangle the track so the attacks stand out.

I have found that with careful adjustment Dgog can track fast snare hits very well. I had to learn that since the audio is being replaced, it can be mangled beyond recognition in order to get reliable triggering. For instance, I will typically eq out major chucks of the spectrum to isolate the snare...

Why wouldn't you just compress the audio before Drumagog sees it?
In Nuendo, I insert a comp in insert slot 1, squash to taste and insert drumagog in insert slot 3 (leaving an insert in case I need to EQ the track as well).
